How to Replace an Audi G28 Engine Speed Sensor
Charles the Humble Technician teaches how to replace the G28 Engine Speed Sensor. The sensor is located at the top of the transmission just above the flywheel ring gear. It transmits a signal to the ECU via the grey wire (T55/49) which is then sent to the tachometer in the instrument cluster.
1. Engine Speed Sensor
The grey wire is located at the edges of the transmission, just above the flywheel ring. The sensor transmits an electrical signal through the grey wire to pin T55/49. The ECU uses this information to control fuel and boost. It also sends an indicator to the G5 Tachometer within the instrument cluster.
The sensor is used to connect the G40 Camshaft position Sensor. The ecu needs to be aware of when the crankshaft has reached TDC, and where the camshaft lies in order to activate the spark and injectors.
If this sensor fails when it fails, the ECU will display an error code P00160. This indicates that the Crank Shaft is out of line with the Intake Camshaft. It could also indicate an issue with the chain or a jump in the chain link of the upper chain. The code won't appear without the additional information supplied by other sensors (G4 or G40).
It's a bit tricky to test as there are different pins on the connector, and they all have different functions. The most effective method to test it is by measuring the resistance between the ECU and the sensor. It should read around 1000 ohms if the sensor is in full operation. Check for evidence of coolant or oil in the connector bay if you are experiencing problems with this part.
2. Injectors
Yesterday accelerating full speed from highway paytoll, I experienced an abrupt drop in power like the engine is out of gas or the injectors aren't firing at all. I took out the spark plugs this morning and found that 3 were soaked in gasoline, and the 4th was dry. I placed a tissue over each injector hole and when I turn the engine on without sparks, the ones with gazoline jump out. The 4th one stays shut. I checked the ground connection on ECU pins 14/55, 30/55 and 48/55. i get zero ohm. I assume that the problem is replacement key for audi a4 somewhere else.
I also tried to reset the PID with no success. The car will start when the G28 is disconnected, but it works fine when the G28 plugged in. However, the intermittent misfire problem still occurs at higher RPM. The temperature sensor for the coolant (G62) shows the wrong temp value -49c even when i unplug it. I also noticed that the oil gauge in the cockpit shows 2 bar but the actual pressure is zero.
I'm not sure what to do, i believe that i've completely ruled out read more all other possibilities. However, i'm afraid that i might have missed something. Please let me know should you have any suggestions! TIA!
3. Fuel Pump
The fuel pump in the g28 can be activated by a signal sent from the RPM sensor. The GM-style transmitter is identical to the G4 sender, and both operate on the 80,100,200, UrS, and RS2 vehicles. You can easily find an extra in a wrecking shop or parts store. It is simple to test them - put your DMM in resistance mode and measure the resistance between pins 1 (with the bump on the connector's side up) and 2 (2nd from the left on the black connector's end). They should be infinite ohms.
4. ECU
The ECU in our 20vt turbo (3B AAN ABY ADU) engines must know the position and speed the crankshaft in order to make a decision about timing of fuel injectors, etc. In order to do this it utilizes a Crank Position Sensor (G4) and an Engine Speed Sensor (G28). If either of these sensors go wrong, you will receive codes on the diagnostic scanner which can lead to engine shutdown.
A malfunctioning G28 sensor can cause an inaccurate gearbox speed counter, a gearbox that shifts faster than normal, and/or an unfire when in the gear. 5. Tachometer
A malfunctioning engine sensor can cause a variety of issues in your car.
